Shane's Top 100 Movies
And Then There Were 100
(2004-3-23 -

After I had the three main groups, I continued to sub-divide. I broke the Excellent group up into 3 groups which later became my 5-star, 4.75-star and 4.5-star groups. I divided the Great group and Good group into two subgroups each. Though I knew none of the Good group would make the top 100 at that point, I decided to keep then in the process until the end - I did manage to rank my top 196 films :).

As I furthered my sorting, I found I was ranking cinematographically good films too high just because I knew -other- people who like them. My giver personality was overriding my ability to make a this list about -my- favorites. I had to often just let go of thinking and see what raw emotions a film stirred up. For many films I get excited about the prospect of watching again, but the films I ranked too high just because they "were well done" I got nothing more than a dispassionate sense of respect.

A second criteria I started using was:

Probability that I'd watch a movie again. More specifically, how often will I tend to watch the film. What's its replay value?

I like this criteria, but it, too has the drawback of ranking some films too high and others too low. There are some comedies that I watch very often just because they are "fun" and some dramas I watch rarely because they are difficult. That doesn't mean comedies should dominate the top of my list and dramas should be delegated to the bottom.

So, probability I'll watch a film again is a factor, but not the only one, in its ranking in this list.
