Software Recommendations

Opera The best web browser out there. Mouse gestures, tabbed browsing done right, pervasive use of instant text-search and blazing-fast speed. Don't forget popup blocking, built in RSS reader (and email client), Zooming, automatic session restore (close your browser, re-open it, all your windows are still there).... the list goes on. If you follow only one recommendation on this page, go download opera right now! Instant Back-button (and Forward-button).
Firefox

If Opera doesn't make you happy, try Firefox. Firefox starts out kinda minimal, but they have a great plug-in system that, once you've found the right plug-ins, can make Firefox comparable to Opera.

Just DON'T USE Internet Explorer (at least v6 or earlier). Lack of pop-up blocking by itself is inexcusable. Furhter, Tabbed browsing is essential.

PocoMail / Barca Looking for a powerful, alternative mail reader and personal organizer? Look no further, here is my email reader of choice. It is powerful, flexible and fast.
Trillian Let's talk instant messaging. Are you on AOL? How about Yahoo? Maybe MSN too? No problem, get all of them at once with Trillian. Trillian, besides being a decent multi-IM-client, has one really nifty feature that should be popping up in any program that handles text - but isn't: when someone types you a message, key words that are found in the Wikipedia online encyclopedia are underlined. Mouse-over them and see wikipedia's entry pop up. What a great way to find out random and sometimes useful information :).
OpenOffice.org

It's a full Office Suite. It's free. It works great - and supports styles better than MS' suite. Plus it allows you to directly export to PDF - very handy.

The Semware Editor Editing a lot of code? Need a fast, reliable, powerful text editor? Try TSE! It looks rather antiquated by today's standards, but for text editing, its hard to beat it.
